The couple sought to create a cozy home that reflects the coastal environment without being overly themed. Inspired by Sea Ranch in California, they integrated materials like tile and wood while adjusting the floor plan for better connectivity. General Assembly focused on maximizing space creatively, incorporating features such as screens and openings for social interaction. By embracing the home's modest size, the design fosters a sense of togetherness, evident in elements like a sunken tub with a window connecting interior and exterior, allowing interaction between residents.
"It's about being aware of other people around you," says Zames. "We didn't try to pretend the house was something that it wasn't."
Stief points out that the addition of a wee window continues the home's mission of interweaving interior and exterior. "If you're sitting in the tub and somebody's outside, you can say hi to them."
The designers point out that smaller homes aren't about isolating from one anotherâa house like Matz and Kim's is instead all about connecting.
Zames and Stief are well acquainted with making use of every last square inch...a happy discovery during the outfitting of Matz and Kim's abode was a crawlspace under the house."
