Innovative Floating Community Redefines Sustainable Urban Living & Will Be The Largest In Europe - Yanko Design
Briefly

Rotterdam's Spoorweghaven community, designed by Danish architects MAST, introduces a groundbreaking approach to urban development. Featuring over a hundred affordable apartments and engaging public spaces, this floating neighborhood embodies Scandinavian design principles and adaptability to rising water levels. Unique sustainability features include floating reed beds that purify harbor water and enhance biodiversity. With an emphasis on connectivity, the design includes public walkways and bike paths, offering residents easy access to the city while promoting communal spaces that foster social interaction within a serene aquatic environment.
The floating development is more than an engineering feat-it is a celebration of Scandinavian ingenuity and urban adaptability.
This project proposes a new choreography-one where homes, public spaces, and even gardens gently float above the ground.
MAST collaborated with the Scottish company Biomatrix to create over 900 square meters of floating reed beds that encircle the perimeter of the site.
Residents will glide from apartment to city center by bicycle, or step out onto communal terraces and rooftop gardens.
