Briefly

Foster + Partners has won a competition to transform Shanghai's Putuo District through a 3.2-square-kilometre masterplan centered around urban regeneration near Shanghai West Railway Station. The plan features two pedestrian corridors linking the station to Zhenru Temple, fostering connectivity with a new urban center. It includes the revitalization of the station area with parks, plazas, and cultural amenities. Additionally, the plan introduces mixed-use developments comprising cultural, retail, office, and housing spaces, aiming to redefine the urban experience for residents and visitors alike.
The project includes two parallel pedestrian corridors connecting the station to Zhenru Temple and a new urban center on a currently undeveloped site.
The masterplan introduces a mix of cultural venues, sports facilities, offices, housing, and retail across a 234,000-square-metre site.
Marilu Sicoli from Foster + Partners highlights that the project enhances the canal network, extending green areas, and improving connections to important cultural landmarks.
The two main pedestrian routes form a circular loop through the district, lined with peach blossom trees and adjacent public amenities.
