The BMA Institute (BMAI), led by Laurene Powell Jobs, is reviving the former San Francisco Art Institute campus into a new art school, albeit unaccredited. After its bankruptcy in 2023, BMAI aims to create a visual arts program that supports emerging artists through renovated studios and workshops. Renovations, spearheaded by Jensen Architects and Page and Turnbull, will restore historic features while ensuring public access to the iconic Diego Rivera mural, valued at $50 million. The renovation process is set to commence in September 2024, lasting several years.
"BMAI has issued a press release announcing its plan of conceptualizing a new visual arts programme rooted in studio practices that will nurture emerging artists."
"The goal of the project is not to impact any of the historic character or historic features of the building, but to really be good stewards and treat them well."
