Shay Lally, a quantity surveyor with a passion for building, has gained an Instagram following of nearly 70,000 by sharing home renovation tips. His journey began in 2007 with the idea for 'Houses to Restore', but it wasn't until the pandemic that the concept gained traction due to the rise of similar accounts. Lally's connection to the building industry comes from childhood experiences with his father, a contractor, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for renovation work.
"My heart was always in the building game. My dad was a contractor, so I grew up on sites. My earliest memories are of my dad collecting me from school and bringing me to a site they were working on."
"I came up with the idea for Houses to Restore in 2007, but there wasn't really a platform for it. During Covid, I saw similar accounts on Instagram and thought, 'I know I can do a better job'."
