Courtyard Renovation for the GuanZhong Mangba Art Festival / Daipu Architects
Briefly

The Guanzhong Mangba Art Festival, initiated by the Guanzhong Art Cooperative, invited architects for the first time in 2023 to contribute to cultural projects. Our project involved the transformation of an abandoned courtyard in Caijiapo, Xi'an, addressing issues like waterlogging while creating a vibrant exhibition space. Inspired by local architecture, we designed a wave-shaped façade and a circular passage that enhances visitor engagement and serves as a drainage system, ultimately revitalizing the local community and culture in a functional and artistic manner.
By incorporating wave-shaped tile elements flowing from a sloped roof, our design crafts a façade that evokes a curtain, harmonizing with the local architecture.
The circular passage at the exhibition hall not only invites exploration but also activates the wave-shaped metal mesh, which serves both aesthetic and functional drainage purposes.
We aimed to rejuvenate the local village through innovative designs in the courtyard, addressing waterlogging and enhancing visitor engagement with the cultural space.
Our project showcases how architecture can reshape local environments, blending functionality with art to create spaces that foster community connection and appreciation.
