Mohammed Azhar, a builder from Bradford, has finally begun demolishing an illegal home extension constructed in 2011 without planning permission, following a lengthy 13-year defiance of court orders. Bradford Council first issued an enforcement notice in 2012, which Azhar ignored despite numerous legal actions taken against him, including several fines and a prosecution. In court, Azhar attributed the extension's existence to a family need; however, compliance was never met until legal pressure led to the commencement of demolition work in late 2023.
Azhar's troubles began in 2011 when he built an extension without planning permission. As a builder by profession, he was aware of the need for planning permission.
‘Over the years, contact was made with the defendant numerous times, but there was no compliance,’ Stranex said in court.
Despite a retrospective planning application being submitted and subsequently refused in January 2013, Azhar continued to ignore the order.
At that point, Azhar told the court that he would have the extension demolished within three months. But this never happened.
