Brixton mainline station is set for refurbishment as Network Rail and VolkerFitzpatrick plan to replace the deteriorating 1980s cladding with vertical aluminium fins. The upgrade will address issues such as water drainage falling onto shoppers below and improve the station's aesthetic with a darker brown cladding. Although the old white arches under the platform won't be replaced, anti-pigeon mesh will enhance daylight access. The platform canopy will be replaced alongside new lighting and repainting of stairs. The project is under consideration by Lambeth Council.
The refurbishment aims to replace the existing plastic sheet cladding with a system of vertical aluminium fins, while also upgrading the drainage underneath the platforms.
The current cladding, installed in 1986, has deteriorated and is allowing water from the drainage system to fall down onto the Atlantic Road's shoppers below.
The choice of a darker brown for the new cladding, in contrast to the blue cladding in use at the moment, is said to be less imposing on the local area.
The planning application is now with Lambeth Council for consideration.
