Ancient boats found under fishpond in Vietnam

Two ancient wooden boats have been discovered under a fishpond in Thuan Thanh, northern Vietnam, dated to the Han Dynasty era (111 B.C.-203 A.D.). These boats were unearthed during a restoration effort and are approximately 50 and 46 feet long, respectively. Initially thought to be simple dugout canoes, excavation revealed them to consist of solid timber planks. With parallel construction and six compartments, they offer insights into ancient maritime practices. Archaeological analysis continues on found artifacts and organic materials to better understand their function and the region's historical cargo and agricultural practices.
