A Slow and Soulful Renovation: Heather Shaw's Victorian Home in Toronto - Remodelista
Briefly

Heather Shaw, the Toronto-based artist behind Pi'lo, showcases her beautifully renovated 1880s Victorian home and its interiors. Initially featured by Remodelista in 2011, Shaw's house remains a remarkable example of thoughtful design. Over 20 years, she gradually transformed the space, adding handmade textiles, reinvigorating old details, and crafting a unique aesthetic reflective of her artistry. The project involved local collaborations, underscoring a community spirit. Shaw treasures the home's history, highlighting its appeal, functionality, and the intricate design choices that enhance her family’s living experience alongside their creative pursuits.
The Victorian staircase is painted simply in black primer. "One coat and it has held up. I liked the stock primer out of the can so much that I never changed it."
It was truly a neighborhood project," Shaw explains. "The architect was her neighbor, Edward Lee, and the contractor another neighbor.
I fell in love with the old details of this house when we bought it, and was sold before making it further than the entryway," says Shaw.
The house is the result of a slow, considered renovation done over a 20-year period: She replaced the windows, first thing.
