From early next year, millions of homeowners will no longer need planning permission to install a heat pump after the government scrapped the one-metre rule. This change allows easier and larger installations, a significant step forward in promoting clean heat adoption.
The government’s decision to remove planning permission requirements was partly due to research indicating that 34% of customers are deterred from installing heat pumps because of planning rules, highlighting the regulatory barriers previously faced.
Chris O'Shea, CEO of Centrica, stated that the ‘previous regulations were outdated’ and expressed delight at the removal of the one-metre rule, emphasizing the industry’s support for the new legislation.
The new regulations increase the allowable heat pump size from 0.6m³ to 1.5m³, and homeowners can now install two heat pumps instead of just one, which significantly enhances homeowners' options.
