Ways to Personalize a Rental Apartment: At Home with Swedish artist-designer Elisabeth Dunker of Fine Little Day
"I like things that are sprawling, mismatched, and fragmentary. Elisabeth's design philosophy emphasizes organic, layered aesthetics that celebrate imperfection and eclecticism in everyday objects and spaces."
"Still, we couldn't tear out things that work, so instead, we made small changes and learned to live with the rest. This approach reflects practical design thinking that prioritizes functional adaptation over complete renovation, especially within rental constraints."
"Creating, discovering, and spreading the word about art, design, and eco-friendly products since 2007. Fine Little Day's mission combines artistic expression with environmental responsibility and community engagement through accessible home design."
Elisabeth Dunker is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and founder of Fine Little Day, a Gothenburg design studio established in 2007. Starting as an intuitive blog nearly 20 years ago, the studio now produces elevated everyday goods including prints, textiles, and home accessories. Dunker serves as lead designer and creative director alongside co-founder Ulrika Engberg. She lives with her husband Dennis, a neurointerventionalist physician, in a rented two-bedroom apartment in a historic Gothenburg building. Despite rental limitations, Dunker strategically enhanced the space through thoughtful modifications while accepting unchangeable elements, creating a functional family gathering place that accommodates visits from adult children and grandchildren.
