The architects introduced a pair of cantilevered "saddlebags," subtle extensions that created full-depth desks, extra seating, and a surprising sense of spaciousness. The effect is both functional and poetic, a balance between precision and comfort, achieved entirely through smart thinking rather than excess building."

A Seattle couple converted a 110-square-foot backyard shed into two separate 55-square-foot workspaces to accommodate two full-time remote jobs and a growing family. The original shed platform was retained to reduce cost, minimize waste, and protect the roots of a nearby heritage tree. Cantilevered saddlebags provide full-depth desks, additional seating, and a greater sense of space within each compact room. Walls were raised to the zoning height limit and wrapped in translucent polycarbonate panels to diffuse daylight. Shifting patterns of light and shadow from the heritage tree fill the interiors, creating a living, inviting work environment.
