Renters Intentionally Removed the Bedroom Wall in This Apartment (the Result Is Airy)
"Even though the original decor wasn't the couple's favorite feature, the arrangement itself was a pretty sweet deal. Katsumi's parents own the apartment and rent it out to the couple (and, at the time, their soon-to-be-born daughter). But soon after moving in, the couple started making changes. One of Wakana's proudest projects was removing the wall between the living room and bedroom. While it technically reduced their rooms from two to one, it likely made the space feel much more expansive. However, one of the most aesthetically pleasing transformations occurred on the walls."

Four years ago Katsumi and Wakana Kobayashi moved into a one-bedroom apartment in Nagano prefecture. The original interiors resembled "hospital company housing," though the ownership and rent arrangement with Katsumi's parents was advantageous. The couple removed the wall between the living room and bedroom, reducing two rooms to one and creating a more expansive feel. Wakana's favorite feature is a concrete wall with haphazardly applied putty revealed when she stripped the wallpaper. The space features curated furnishings and decor sourced from international and vintage vendors, including notable pieces of seating, rugs, lighting, and ceramics.
