"Doing much of the work ourselves was hard and at times difficult to manage with two full-time jobs and two small children, but it was also rewarding, and we've picked up lots of new skills along the way."
"We're proud that we managed to achieve an EPC rating of A in a period home,"
"We really feel the benefits of the sustainability elements, as we are very cozy and warm-and our energy bills are low."
"And charring the wood [which they did themselves!] gave us the aesthetic we wanted while protecting it without using paint or varnish."
James Morton and Fenella Barlow-Pay, both doctors, renovated their late-19th-century Glasgow Edwardian terrace to function as a modern, sustainable home. They worked with Loader Monteith to remove gas, add breathable wood fibre insulation, secure the neighborhood's first approval for roof solar panels, and build a two-part corten steel and burnt-larch extension that reused an existing 1970s addition. The couple completed much of the physical work themselves while balancing full-time jobs and two small children. The retrofit achieved an EPC A rating, reduced energy bills, improved comfort, and used charred larch to protect timber without paint or varnish.
