Adding a porch can enhance a home's appeal, but builders must follow UK regulations regarding size and positioning. A porch can be no more than three metres high without requiring planning permission, and must not exceed three square metres in floor area or be closer than two metres to a street boundary. Such considerations ensure that homeowners can add functional beauty without running into regulatory issues or objections from neighbors.
"If your porch is going to exceed three metres in height, you will need to apply for porch planning permission," explains Liam Spencer, owner of Northallerton Glass.
"If your porch is designed within these parameters, then it is classed as a permitted development and planning permission is not required," says Rachael Munby, chief marketing officer at Anglian Home Improvements.
