"All we said was that we wanted purple paint on the cabinets, and she ran with it. I was thinking eggplant, but she came up with something completely different and saw the vision before I did. The designer transformed the initial kitchen concept into something the homeowners hadn't envisioned themselves."
"I knew I could do that because it's small and has high ceilings. But I had another idea. What about making the dining room an actual library? The designer proposed converting the dining room into a multipurpose library space, recognizing the room's proportions could support this transformation."
When a frozen washing machine hose prompted Patty and Chris Raz to reconsider their kitchen's layout, they enlisted designer Lauren Lothrop Caron to reimagine the space. The couple's simple request for purple cabinets evolved into a complete cottage renovation. Caron proposed painting the kitchen in a moody purple and transforming the dining room into a multipurpose library lined with bookcases. The library displays hardcover books from auctions, Chris's camera collection, and pottery the couple creates together in weekly classes. Design details including pivoting sconces, custom drawer pulls, and a window bench create an inviting atmosphere. By strategically relocating the laundry room and rethinking spatial flow, Caron maximized every inch of the 1,130-square-foot home.
