A conversation can become one-sided when conviction takes over and attention drifts. Self-criticism may lessen when the interaction itself creates the conditions for disengagement. This pattern can occur in any setting, not only conferences. The issue is not the content of beliefs but the way beliefs are related to, especially when rigidity and indignation narrow the relational field. When beliefs are treated as fixed and settled, there is little room for surprise, negotiation, or joint discovery. Beliefs can be understood as constructions that shape perception, what is noticed or overlooked, and who one takes oneself to be. When beliefs become unchecked and calcified, they can undermine openness and responsiveness to other viewpoints.
