Visual perception extends far beyond conscious awareness. Blindsight, a neurological condition resulting from brain damage to visual processing areas, reveals that people unable to consciously see can still accurately identify visual stimuli when guessing. In experiments, blindsight patients correctly identified bar orientations and demonstrated attention to unseen objects at rates exceeding chance. Inattentional blindness further demonstrates unconscious visual processing, where people fail to notice visible stimuli when attention is directed elsewhere. These phenomena suggest the brain processes visual information through multiple pathways, with much occurring beneath conscious awareness. The most accepted interpretation indicates people with blindsight perceive objects unconsciously, with visual information processed but not reaching conscious recognition.
