ChatGPT and Political Correctness
Using respectful language for diverse identities matters, and appropriate politically correct terms can change over time and depend on social, cultural, and political context. Fear of offending can lead to avoidance and anxious mannerisms that reduce authentic human connection. AI may suggest more politically correct phrasing, but it cannot fully navigate the nuances involved in understanding differences. Constructive responses include avoiding assumptions, seeking feedback, and practicing self-soothing to manage anxiety. In teaching about gender and racial discrimination and medical bias, language choices affect how people experience health and well-being. A real example shows that an intended compliment can be derogatory in another culture, requiring apology and adjustment.
"Choosing appropriate, politically correct (PC) language when describing diverse identities is important in this work, and, of course, what is considered PC changes over time and depends on the social, cultural, and political context. This means that I'm often editing and revising my language. But in our deeply polarized nation, being PC can feel like a no-win situation - i.e., either you are "woke" or MAGA."
"Fear of offending can compromise true human connection by fueling avoidance and anxious mannerisms."
"AI might try to make you more PC, but it cannot navigate the nuances of understanding differences. Avoiding assumptions, seeking feedback, and self-soothing will get you closer to genuine human connection."
