""People believe all sorts of things about how the world's going to end. Some people mean human extinction, some people mean the collapse of civilization or some sort of transformation of civilization as we know it...""
""People's attitudes to global risks depend on four factors: how soon you think the world is going to end, how you think it's going to end, what role you personally have in its end, and what you think is going to happen after the end.""
""If you think that the end of the world is in God's hands, if it's the fulfillment of a supernatural prophecy, that will predict that you are not willing to take on costly actions to prevent global risks, like climate change.""
Beliefs about how the world will end vary widely, including human extinction, civilization collapse, or complete destruction. These beliefs impact attitudes toward global risks based on four factors: perceived timing of the end, nature of the end, personal role in it, and expectations for the aftermath. For instance, believing the end is predetermined by a supernatural force may reduce willingness to take costly actions against global risks like climate change. Research involved six pilot studies with over 3,400 participants to explore these psychological influences.
