Indonesian officials are deploying cloud seeding techniques to combat severe flooding in Jakarta and surrounding regions, which has displaced thousands and resulted in at least one death. The heavy rains started on Monday and are forecasted to continue until March 11. Authorities have mobilized rescue workers and supplies, while emphasizing that while they cannot eliminate rainfall, they can dampen its intensity. Cloud seeding involves dispersing chemicals into clouds to modify precipitation patterns, aiming to alleviate the pressure on the city’s infrastructure during peak rainfall periods.
Cloud seeding, a technique that involves releasing salt or other chemicals into clouds to trigger rain, aims to steer rainfall away from flood-hit areas or limit the formation of heavier downpours.
Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia's weather agency, emphasized, 'We can't prevent the rain, that's impossible, but we can reduce the intensity. We can't let the clouds get too big, so we will make it come down little by little.'
