Chaturanga Dandasana appears simple but requires special strength in the arms, wrists, and abdominal muscles to hold the body steady against gravity. The pose depends on concentrating on lengthening the body parallel to the floor and aligning the spinal column to prevent excessive curves. Continued practice builds both mental and physical strength, especially the ability to persist when difficulty arises. The asana strengthens the arms and trunk while stretching back through the legs to engage lower-body muscles that stabilize the pelvis and spine and reduce load on the arms. Strength should not be rigid; breathing should remain free and the face and diaphragm soft. The pose teaches softness within strength and the balance of effort and grace.
"Like so many asanas, Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff) looks much easier than it is. The pose requires special strength in the arms, wrists and abdominal muscles to hold the body still against the downward pull of gravity."
"This asana strengthens the muscles of the arms and the trunk. In addition, stretching back through the legs brings the large muscles of the lower body into play. These help to stabilize the pelvis and the spine, and some work is taken off the arms."
