The final episode of The Sympathizer has to bring many different themes together and nail down a fairly intangible moral lesson. It complicates the understanding of the previous episodes by revealing the narrator to be unreliable and must stick a difficult technical landing.
Co-showrunner Don McKellar mentioned that the series was about duality, morality, and the point of life. The ending had to unify slippery conclusions on these themes, finding meaning in nothingness.
