The alphabet has formed America since its origins, symbolically representing and forming children. Alphabetization has become the default mode for organizing subjectivity, which is surprisingly problematic.
The New England Primer presented the alphabet through Biblically themed, morally didactic rhymes. Today, ABC books serve various purposes, including satire and artistic expression.
