At these Summer Olympics, there will be 329 medal events - 157 for men, 152 for women, and 20 mixed-gender events. Around 10,500 athletes will compete for close to 1,000 medals with gender parity, a first in history.
Historically, Team USA has been outstanding at the Summer Olympics with 1,070 gold medals and 2,667 overall. The Soviet Union, Great Britain, and China follow with notable achievements.
