In the wake of the Gaza war, where more than 61,700 Palestinians lost their lives, survivors like Aya Hassouna face overwhelming grief. Aya returned home alone to northern Gaza, having lost her husband Abdullah and their two young children, Hamza and Raghad, in an airstrike. As she navigated through painful memories, she grappled with her sense of loss amid families reuniting. Aya carried her family's clothes on her journey, retaining a connection to her loved ones but feeling profound loneliness, struggling to cope with the separation and the remnants of her destroyed home.
Since that time, I have been trying to be strong. I am trying to endure the separation, Aya said. But everything around me reminds me of them.
Sadness was eating away at my heart, Aya said. Sometimes I cried. I looked at the families walking together, a mother, a father and their children.
