The Women’s Prize for Nonfiction has released its longlist, featuring 16 authors, including Neneh Cherry, Anne Applebaum, and Yuan Yang. This prize aims to address gender disparities in nonfiction awards. Notable works include Cherry's memoir 'A Thousand Threads' and Yang's exploration of modern China. The jury chair, Kavita Puri, highlighted the unifying quality of storytelling, depth of research, and various themes like power dynamics, injustice, and overlooked perspectives, including Indigenous voices. The shortlist will be announced on March 26, leading up to the winner announcement on June 12.
The longlisted titles boast so many different disciplines and genres...the quality of the writing, the authority of the voice and the originality of their storytelling.
Themes that emerged were power and control, how it's used, how it's abused, injustice, human connections with each other, the natural world and climate change.
