Maurice Sendak, best known for his illustrations in children's literature, first gained professional recognition at just 18 years old, illustrating the popular science book "Atomics for the Millions."
According to science historian Ryan Dahn, Sendak's agreement to illustrate the book was for 1% of the royalties, netting him a $100 advance, equivalent to about $1600 today.
