Maria Medem's beautiful new comic is written to the rhythm of flamenco
Briefly

In "Land of Mirrors", María's protagonist Antonia navigates loneliness in a deserted town, fixating on a flower she visits daily. The arrival of a traveler forces her to question if forming new friendships is worth leaving her beloved flower behind. Influenced by flamenco music, María undertook a three-year process to illustrate the vibrant narrative, emphasizing a color palette rooted in memory rather than realism. The art's enchanting colors and line work invite readers into a fantastical world, marking a significant evolution from her earlier black-and-white illustrations.
"I tried to draw one or two pages a day. I started turning those words into images. I always try to use as few words as possible, if something can be said with images I try to do it that way."
"Now my way of working with colours has much to do with memory, as they aren't realistic colours. When I colour a scene I try to remember a certain landscape or place where I've been that has the same atmosphere that I want that scene to have."
