In early 2020, facing isolation during the pandemic, the author decided to write a love story where the characters ultimately prevail. Inspired by Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, she wanted the narrative to be rich in history and family connections. While interviewing assistants for support, she discovered a poignant letter from 1863 written by James Tate, an enslaved man, to his wife Olivia. This letter, showcasing unwavering love despite enslavement, became the cornerstone of her next book, emphasizing the resilience of love against societal constraints.
"Despite James's master having a vested interest in James producing children so that his labor force would be maintained, James would not give up on Olivia."
"This is it, I said to myself. That letter would be the foundation for my next book."
