Ippei Mizuhara, former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani, has requested an 18-month prison sentence for stealing nearly $17 million to cover gambling debts. Federal prosecutors, however, are seeking a 57-month sentence and significant restitution payments. In a heartfelt letter to Judge John W. Holcomb, Mizuhara expressed deep remorse and described his sacrifices while working for Ohtani since late 2017, hoping for a merciful sentence that considers the impact of his actions on many lives.
I am truly remorseful for the actions that I took. Since late 2017, I had been working with Shohei Ohtani... I had sacrificed not only my own life but my family's life.
I am writing you today before my sentencing hearing. Sadly, I am asking for your leniency in sentencing me and plead that your sentence be merciful.
