Gwen Watkins obituary
Briefly

Gwen Watkins, who passed away at age 101, was a significant codebreaker at Bletchley Park during World War II. Joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in 1941, she was integral in deciphering German air force codes, enabling more effective strategies against Luftwaffe bombers. Watkins worked primarily in Hut 10 and Block F, contributing to the analysis of communication patterns that assisted allied reconnaissance and bombing missions. Her efforts not only helped destroy enemy aircraft but crucially increased the safety of allied pilots through advance knowledge of enemy movements.
Bill Bonsall, who headed the German sub-section in which Watkins worked, recalled that the number of enemy aircraft destroyed as a result of Bletchley's intelligence was impressive, but the most important contribution was the saving of allied pilots' lives through constant awareness and foreknowledge of the enemy's activities.
Gwen Watkins's fluency in German led to her crucial role at Bletchley Park, where she helped decode the Luftwaffe's air forces signals, providing invaluable intelligence.
