A book borrowed from St Bees School before World War I has finally been returned more than a century overdue, revealing a poignant connection to its last borrower.
Inside the book, the name Leonard Ewbank is inscribed, along with the date September 25, 1911; Ewbank, a former pupil, was later killed in battle in 1916.
Andrew Keep, the headteacher, expressed gratitude for the book's return, stating it’s incredible to think that a piece of St Bees’ history has come back to us.
St Bees School, which has a remarkable history of notable alumni, including Rowan Atkinson, celebrated the return of the book, marking an important connection to its legacy.
