"Teaching children was one of the great joys of my life," said Abbe. "It kept me young, and I knew I wanted to do something for that to continue, to keep me connected to those students."
When Abbe closed her school in 2022 after 52 years, she knew that writing a children's book with her granddaughter, Callie Lawler, would be her first project. "The Big Day at Miss Tilly's Ballet" was self-published by the pair earlier this year and has been on shelves in select San Francisco stores.
Lawler and her grandmother began discussing a book in 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. It became a special bonding experience.
Abbe's classes were considered a rite of passage for many children, especially little girls from private schools like the Hamlin School, where Abbe's mother, Irene, was an esteemed teacher.
