Auschwitz: 80 years after its liberation, three survivors tell their stories
Briefly

As the world observes the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, survivors like Albrecht Weinberg share harrowing tales of their experiences. Weinberg, who witnessed the brutalities of the Holocaust as a teenager, recalls his idyllic childhood in Germany before the rise of the Nazis. He recounts the loss of his parents and the anti-Semitic violence that led to the family's deportation. After enduring Nazi oppression and losing a brother, Weinberg has dedicated his later life to educating others about the Holocaust, emphasizing the journey from peaceful coexistence to horrifying persecution.
Before the Nazis came to power, life was idyllic. We lived happily alongside our neighbours... Then the Nazis came to power and antisemitism raised its ugly head.
Albrecht and Friedel emigrated to the US, returning to live in Germany after 65 years. Dieter moved back to East Frisia, but was killed in a motorcycle accident in Leer in 1947.
