As If It Were Forever - Audre Lorde (1934-1992) - San Francisco Bay Times
Briefly

Audre Lorde's voice was both imperious and seductive. At poetry readings, the music of her Caribbean and New York City tones drew me toward her as her cadence signaled she was saying something that must be remembered.
After she'd read them, she declared my collection of stories was really meant to be a novel and told me what was needed to make it work. I turned the collection into The Gilda Stories, which has been in print for more than thirty years.
