Andrea Strongwater, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' inaugural artist-in-residence, uses vibrant colors and storytelling to evoke positive emotions and shine a light on the importance of insects. As she studies the Cornell University Insect Collection, her goal is to create artwork that brings visibility to the significance of bugs and the educational role of Cornell. Strongwater's connection with the entomology department fosters an appreciation of insects and encourages innovative thinking within purpose-driven science.
I want my art to tell stories. It should make you happy. It should be enlivening.
We are a college driven by creative innovation, and her residency reminds us to think differently about how we can expand people's understanding of the purpose-driven science done here.
I don't see as many bugs in nature as I used to. I want this work to bring visibility to the importance of insects.
Andrea brings a curiosity and creativity that has been so magnetic for everyone working in the collection to be around.
