Sexual Violence Against Children Soars in Congo, U.N. Group Says
Briefly

UNICEF reported a surge in sexual violence against children in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with documented cases of rape reaching alarming numbers. Between January 27 and February 2, 170 child rape cases were reported in one week alone, a sharp increase from an average of 95 cases in the previous weeks. Armed men involved in ongoing ethnic violence and conflicts over resources are responsible for these acts. Approximately half a million people have been displaced as violent clashes, particularly involving the M23 rebels, continue to escalate in the region.
UNICEF's executive director Catherine Russell stated, 'In North and South Kivu provinces, we are receiving horrific reports of grave violations against children by parties to the conflict, including rape and other forms of sexual violence at levels surpassing anything we have seen in recent years.'
