Two years after the Ethiopia-Tigray peace accords, tensions rise in Tigray and fears of returning conflict loom. While some calm was achieved after the November 2022 agreement, issues persist, including economic hardships and a divided political landscape. Many remain displaced, and unrest is cultivated by a split within the Tigrayan elite, notably between factions led by Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda. Analysts warn that the historical unity of the Tigray People's Liberation Front has deteriorated significantly, threatening the fragile peace in the region.
Though the November 2022 peace agreement brought some calm, many are still displaced - and fear of a return to the war that rocked Tigray and neighboring regions.
After some time, problems arose due to differences among the leaders. They have split into two factions, creating unrest in society and instilling fear about what will happen next.
The TPLF had been very united for many, many years; they’d always resolved their problems internally. Now they are completely and utterly split.
People are worried. People are not working, and long queues have formed at banks as they try to withdraw money.
