The crackdown by paramilitary troops and police began shortly before midnight on Tuesday, with authorities turning off streetlights and ordering nearby shops, cafes, and markets to close.
Thousands of protesters, led by Bushra Bibi, had gathered in the capital since Monday night, vowing to stage a sit-in to demand the release of Imran Khan, jailed since last August.
Mr. Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, claimed victory in recent general elections while accusing the current civilian government of being a puppet of the military.
Four civilians were reported killed by gunfire during the unrest, highlighting the violent clash between Khan's supporters and security forces amid Pakistan's ongoing political turmoil.
