In response to increasing pressure from the U.S. and a changing geopolitical landscape, China facilitated discussions between Iranian and Russian officials regarding Iran's nuclear program. The aim was to align their positions against Western influence and reaffirm support for the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Key highlights from the meeting included a focus on diplomatic dialogue and calls to eliminate sanctions and pressure tactics. Experts emphasize the need for negotiations to restore the JCPOA benefits, which were disrupted by the U.S. withdrawal in 2018.
"We reiterate that political and diplomatic dialogue based on mutual respect is the only effective and practical option," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma said according to state media.
Wu Bingbing argues that the JCPOA reflects the interests of all sides in the nuclear issue, by allowing Iran to 'peacefully develop nuclear energy,' and promote 'the nuclear non-proliferation regime.'
