ICC prosecutor Karim Khan's visit to DR Congo aims to address the escalating violence in the eastern region, exacerbated by the M23 rebels backed by Rwanda. As violence mounts, including over 7,000 reported deaths since January, efforts for peace include appointing former African leaders as facilitators for peace. The East African Community and Southern African Development Community are pushing for an immediate ceasefire, though previous calls have gone unheeded as the M23 continues its advance. Khan is set to meet with national leaders and local representatives to discuss the situation.
"We are extremely worried about recent developments in Congo, we know the situation particularly in the east is acute," Khan told reporters upon his arrival in the capital Kinshasa.
The trio includes ex-Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, ex-Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and ex-Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The EAC and the SADC said in a statement their goal is an 'immediate and unconditional ceasefire.'
According to DR Congo Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, more than 7,000 people have been killed in the region since January.
