"The Saudi-backed governor of Yemen's Hadramout province has announced the launch of an operation to peacefully take back military positions from the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC), stressing that the actions were not a declaration of war. Salem al-Khanbashi said on Friday that the Operation to Take Over Camps would aim to peacefully and systematically take over military sites in Yemen's southern province."
"Al Jazeera's Mohammed Al Attab, reporting from Sanaa, said fighting was reported to be taking place on Friday in positions where STC forces are located along the Saudi border. We are still waiting for confirmation about what is going on there, Al Attab said, adding that the latest information available from the area suggested the STC had maintained control of its positions."
Salem al-Khanbashi launched the Operation to Take Over Camps to peacefully and systematically retake military sites across Hadramout province. The operation is framed as a precautionary security measure rather than a declaration of war or escalation. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government appointed al-Khanbashi to lead National Shield forces with full military, security and administrative authority to restore order. The STC did not immediately respond to the declaration. Riyadh and the internationally recognised Yemeni government accused the UAE of arming the STC and encouraging seizures of Hadramout and al-Mahra, while initial reports indicated fighting near the Saudi border where the STC held positions.
