Workers accused of digging shortcut through Great Wall of China
Briefly

Two workers from Mongolia were arrested for damaging the Great Wall of China by widening a gap with an excavator, causing irreversible damage to this historical structure. The incident occurred in Shanxi province, as the workers attempted to create a shortcut while working on a construction project. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, the section they damaged is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with significant protective laws in place due to rampant deterioration and vandalism over the centuries. The case is currently under investigation.
Excavators were used to excavate the original gap of the ancient Great Wall into a large gap, so that the excavator can pass through the gap, which caused irreversible damage to the integrity of the Ming Great Wall and the safety of cultural relics.
The Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its historical and architectural significance and the Chinese government has strict laws protecting the iconic landmark because up to two-thirds of the 12,000-mile long structure has deteriorated.
