Without USAID, My Neighbors in Sudan are Starving

Hanin Ahmed, representing the Localization Coordination Council of Sudan, shares her journey from Sudan to the U.S. after being displaced due to ongoing conflict. Reflecting on her experiences, she highlights the essential values of freedom, peace, and justice that resonate with her in America. However, the deprioritization of U.S. aid to Sudan under the previous administration has severely impacted emergency response efforts. Despite these challenges, community response rooms (ERRs) started by local youth have been critical in providing food and support during the crisis, demonstrating resilience amidst one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally.
The world learned, too. With more than 30 million people in need of aid to survive, Sudan is considered by many to be the world's worst humanitarian disaster.
Before leaving, I helped establish the people's response to the war—community centers, where people could find food at communal kitchens, or counseling, or first aid.
