We did nothing wrong': seven men released from custody in Sydney deny Islamist links
"Seven men with suspected links to Islamic extremism have been released from police custody after their dramatic arrest on a street. The Victorian-based group were travelling in convoy through south-west Sydney, potentially to the scene of the shooting massacre at Bondi beach, when tactical police rammed their cars and took them into custody on Thursday. The men were arrested on suspicion that they were plotting a violent act, with police detaining them under special counter-terrorism powers."
"Speaking after their release from custody at Liverpool police station, the men said they did not have links to any extremist views and they were driving to their Airbnb while on holiday in Sydney. We didn't do nothing wrong, there was nothing found on us, one of the men told reporters after being released. The group believed they had been targeted due to their appearance and religion. My head got smashed, I was bleeding all over my head."
Seven men from Victoria were arrested in south-west Sydney after tactical police rammed their cars while the group travelled in convoy. The men were arrested on suspicion of plotting a violent act and were detained under special counter-terrorism powers. They were released about 4pm Friday; they are aged between 19 and 24. The men said they had no links to extremist views and were travelling to an Airbnb while on holiday. One man reported a head injury and the group said they felt targeted because of their appearance and religion. Their lawyer said legal action was being considered. A magistrate had approved a special warrant to allow extended detention beyond the usual six hours, and police said they will monitor the men while they are in NSW.
