Dozens of officers have amassed in the region from Wangaratta and Wodonga. Porepunkah lies around 300km north-east of Melbourne and is close to caravan parks, motels and the popular Porepunkah Pub. The area normally attracts tourists to nearby Bright and the High Country ski resorts.
