U.S. forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife in an overnight military operation, and Maduro pleaded not guilty in a New York courtroom to narco-terrorism charges. Former President Donald Trump said his administration will "run" the Venezuela government during an undefined transition period. The capture prompted Bay Area anti-war protests opposing Trump and expressions of joy from many Venezuelan exiles who blamed Maduro for years of repression and deaths. Several Bay Area Venezuelans with temporary U.S. residency said they feared reprisals from remnants of the Venezuelan government. Nearly eight million Venezuelans fled under Maduro and Chávez, with roughly a million arriving in the U.S., including about 30,000 to California.
