""We have identified 104 releases of political prisoners in Venezuela today," the director of the NGO Foro Penal, Alfredo Romero, said in a post on X."
""We continue to verify other releases from prison. It would be ideal if the government published lists of releases," Romero added."
""significant number""
At least 104 political prisoners in Venezuela were freed on Sunday, according to the NGO Foro Penal. Many freed prisoners were opponents of Nicolas Maduro detained during protests against his contested 2024 election win. Foro Penal director Alfredo Romero said the organization identified 104 releases and was verifying further releases, calling for official lists. Interim president Delcy Rodriguez pledged a "significant number" of releases after Maduro's capture, and her brother Jorge said releases were a goodwill gesture for "peaceful coexistence." Foro Penal reported 777 political prisoners remained as of January 19 and that 143 have been freed since January 8, while Caracas claims 626 freed since December; human rights groups and the opposition say the process is too slow.
